Oakleigh Greek Orthodox College

Beyond the Classroom

Camps and excursions are planned to complement the curriculum and to enrich the learning of every child beyond the classroom. Students from Year 4 to Year 12 attend camp.

Camps

Camps at the College are held once a year and are compulsory for all students from Years 4 to 12. They are considered an important part of the co curricular program of the school as they foster a sense of responsibility for self, others and the wider community. They also provide the students with an alternative avenue for success by offering them the opportunity to undertake tasks that may appear beyond their abilities. The students experience a range of activities in the natural environment and they develop an understanding of the need to preserve it.

A Journey to Our Heritage – Camp in Greece

Our students in GreeceIn the Primary School, the International Camp at Halkidiki started in 2005 for the Years 5 and 6 students . In the Secondary School this experience was first offered to the students in 2007. The camp is intended to give to the students in Years 5 to 9 a once in a lifetime opportunity to improve not only their Greek language skills, but to experience Greece, meet relatives and make life-long friends.

The memories the students bring with them are indelibly imprinted in their hearts.

Debating

The College has introduced a debating/public speaking competition to the students. The debating has occurred in Term Three for the past two years and it involved 10 students selected from each House who were chosen to debate current issues. This took place in the Legislative Assembly in State Parliament House. All students of the Secondary School attended this day to support their selected representatives of the House team.

It is expected this will be an annual event, with the proposal that our College becomes host next year to an Inter-School Debating Competition.
